THE JAMES ALLEY BLUES
The times ain´t now nothin´ like they used to be
The times ain´t now nothin´ like they used to be
I´ll tell you the truth; won´t you take my word from me?
I´ve seen better days, but I ain´t puttin´ up with these
I´ve seen better days, but I ain´t puttin´ up with these
I had lot better times with the women down in New Orleans
Cause I was born in the country she thinks I´m easy to lose
Cause I was born in the country she thinks I´m easy to lose
She wants to hitch me to a wagon and drive me like a mule
I bought her a gold ring and I paid the rent
I bought her a gold ring and I paid the rent
She wants me to wash her clothes, but I got good common sense
If you don´t want me then why don´t you just tell me so?
If you don´t want me then why don´t you just tell me so?
It ain´t like a man got nowhere to go
I give you sugar for sugar, but all you want is salt for salt
I give you sugar for sugar, but all you want is salt for salt
If you can´t get along with me, then it´s your own fault
You want me to love you, but then you just treat me mean
You want me to love you, but then you just treat me mean
You´re my daily thought; you´re my nightly dream
Sometimes I just think that you´re too sweet to die
Sometimes I just think that you´re too sweet to die
And other times I think you ought to be buried alive

Lilly Of The West

LILLY OF THE WEST
When first I came to Louisville
Some pleasure there to find
A damsel there from Lexington
Was pleasin' to my mind
Her ruby lips her rosy cheeks
Like arrows pierced my breast
The name she bore was Flora
The Lilly of the West
I courted lovely Flora
Some pleasure there to find
But she turned onto another man
Which sore distressed my mind
She stole away my liberty
Deprived me of my rest
Then go my lovely Flora
The Lilly of the West
Way down in yonder shady grove
A man of low degree
Conversin' with my Flora there
It seemed so strange to me
The answer that she gave to him
It sore did me oppress
I was betrayed by Flora
The Lilly of the West
I stepped up to my rival
My dagger in my hand
I seized him by the collar
And I boldly bade him stand
Be mad to desperation
I pierced him in his breast
Then go my lovely Flora
The Lilly of the West
Dead Men Dancing Solo
And then I had to stand my trial
I had to make my plea
They put me in the criminal box
And then commenced on me
Although she swore my life away
Deprived me of my rest
Still I love my faithless Flora
The Lilly of the West

SHENANDOAH
Oh Shenandoah,
I long to hear you,
Away you rolling river,
Oh Shenandoah,
I long to hear you,
Away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah,
I love your daughter,
Away you rolling river,
I'll take her 'cross
Your rollin' water,
Away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
'Tis seven years,
I've been a rover,
Away you rolling river,
When I return,
I'll be your lover,
Away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah,
I'm bound to leave you.
Away you rolling river,
Oh Shenandoah,
I'll not deceive you.
Away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.

O Mary Don't You Weep
05:25
|
|||
O MARY DON'T YOU WEEP
Well if I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
Well Mary wore three links and chains
On every link was Jesus' name
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
Well one of these nights bout 12 o'clock
This old world is gonna rock
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
Well Moses stood on the Red Sea shore
Smote' the water with a two by four
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
(O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn)
(O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn)
(Pharaoh's army got drownded)
(O Mary don't you weep)
Well old Mr. Satan he got mad
Missed that soul that he thought he had
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
Brothers and sisters don't you cry
There'll be good times by and by
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
Well O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
Solo
God gave Noah the rainbow sign
"No more water but fire next time"
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Mary don't you weep
(O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn)
(O Mary don't you weep, don't you mourn)
(Pharaoh's army got drownded)
(O Mary don't you weep)

The Water Is Wide
03:22
|
|||
THE WATER IS WIDE
The water is wide
I cannot cross over
And neither have
I wings to fly
Build me a boat
That will carry two
And both shall roam
My Love and I
A ship there is
And she sails the sea
Sailing as deep
As deep can be
But not so deep
As the love I'm in
And I know not
How I sink or swim
I leaned my back
Against some young oak
Thinking she was
A trusty tree
But first she bent
And then she broke
And thus did my
False love to me
The water is wide
I cannot cross over
And neither have
I wings to fly
Build me aboat
That will carry two
And both shall roam
My Love and I

St.Clair's Defeat
07:00
|
|||
ST. CLAIR´S DEFEAT
Was November the fourth in the year of ninety-one
We had a sore engagement near to Fort Jefferson
Sinclair was our commander, which may remembered be
But we left nine hundred soldiers in that Western Territory
At Bunker’s Hill and in Quebec, where many a hero fell
Likewise out on Long Island, it is I the truth can tell
But such a dreadful carnage, never did I see
As happened all out on the plains, near the River St. Marie
Our militia was attacked, just as the day did break
And soon were overpowered, and forced into retreat
They killed major Ouldham, and major Briggs likewise
While horrid yells of anguished souls resounded through the skies
Major Butler he was wounded the very second fire
His manly bosom swelled with rage they forced him to retire
Like one distracted he appeared, when thus exclaim-ed he
Ye hounds of Hell shall all be slain but what revenged I’ll be
We had not very long been broke, when General Butler fell
He cries my boys I’m wounded, pray take me off this field
My word says he, what shall we do, we’re wounded every man
Go charge your valiant heros and beat them if you can
He leaned his back against a tree, and there resigned his breath
And like a valiant soldier, sunk into the arms of death
When blessed angels did await, his spirit to convey
Into celestial fields, he did quickly bend his way
We charged again and took our ground, which did our hearts elate
But there we did not tarry long, they soon made us retreat
They killed our major Ferguson, which caused his men to cry
Stand to your guns says valiant Ford, we’ll fight until we die
Our cannon balls exhausted, artillery men all slain
Our musketeers and riflemen, their fire they did sustain
Three hours more we fought like men, and they were forced to yield
While three hundred bloody warriors lay stretched across the filed
Says colonel Gibson to his men, my boys be not dismayed
I’m sure that true Virginians were never yet afraid
Ten thousand deaths I’d rather die, than they should gain this field
With that he got a fatal shot, causing him to yield
Says major Clark, my heros, we can no longer stand
We shall strive to form in order, and retreat the best we can
The word retreat being passed around, they raised a dreadful cry
Then helter skelter through the woods like wolves and sheep they fly
We left the wounded on the field, O heavens what a shock!
And many bones were shattered, and strewn across the rock
With scalping knives and tomahawks, they robbed some of their breath
While raging flames of torment, tortured other men to death
Was November the fourth in the year of ninety-one
We had a sore engagement near to Fort Jefferson
Sinclair was our commander, which may remembered be
But we left nine hundred soldiers in that Western Territory

Old Texas

OLD TEXAS
I'm going to leave Old Texas now
They got no place for the long horned cow
They've roped and fenced all over the range
And the people there are all so strange
I'll take my horse and I'll take my rope
I'll hit the trail upon a lope
I'll bid adios to the Alamo
I'll turn my face down to Mexico
I'm going to leave Old Texas now
They got no place for the long horned cow
They've roped and fenced all over the range
And the people there are all so strange

Buffalo Skinners

BUFFALO SKINNERS
'Twas in the town of Jacksburo, in the year of '73
That a man by the name of Kreggo come walking up to me
Saying how you doing young feller and would you like to go
To spend the summer pleasantly on the range of the buffalo
Me being out of employment, to Kreggo I did say
This summer on the buffalo range depends upon the pay
For if you pay good wages, transportation to and fro'
It's likely I go with you to the range of the buffalo
Yes I will pay good wages, and transportation too
If you'll agree to work for me until the season's through
But if you do get homesick and you try to run away
You'll starve to death on the buffalo range, and also lose your pay
With all this fancy talking he set up quite a plan
Some ten or twelve in number, all able bodied men
Our trip it was a pleasant one as we hit the westward road
Until we reached Las Cruces in old New Mexico
Well then our pleasures ended and our troubles they begun
When lightning struck the wagon boys and made the buffalo run
A thousand head a-breathin' fire, stampeding they did go
And outlaws waiting to pick us off from the hills of Mexico
Well the working season ended but the drover would not pay
He said 'you boys been extravagant , your all in debt to me'
But the cowboys never heard such a thing as a bankrupt drover-o
So they left his bones to bleach in the hills of Mexico
Across the Rio Grande my boys and homeward we are bound
No one on this buffalo range will ever more be found
Go home to your wives and sweethearts, tell others not to go
To spend the summer pleasantly on the range of the buffalo

Mighty Day
04:36
|

MIGHTY DAY
I remember one September,
When storm winds swept the town;
The high tide from the ocean, Lord,
Put water all around.
Wasn't that a mighty day,
A mighty day
A mighty day,
Great God, that morning
When the storm winds swept the town!
There was a sea-wall there in Galveston
To keep the waters down,
But the high tide from the ocean, Lord,
Put water in the town.
The trumpets warned the people,
'You'd better leave this place!'
But they never meant to leave their homes
Till death was in their face.
Wasn't that a mighty day,
A mighty day
A mighty day,
Great God, that morning
When the storm winds swept the town!
The trains they all were loaded
With people leaving town;
The tracks gave way to the ocean, Lord,
And the trains they went on down.
The seas began to rolling,
The ships they could not land;
I heard a Captain crying,
'God, please save a drowning man!'
Wasn't that a mighty day,
A mighty day
A mighty day,
Great God, that morning
When the storm winds swept the town!
The waters, like some river,
Came a-rushing to and fro;
I saw my father drowning, God,
And I watched my mother go!
Now death, your hands are icy;
You've got them on my knee.
You took away my mother,
Now you're coming after me!
Wasn't that a mighty day,
A mighty day
A mighty day,
Great God, that morning
When the storm winds swept the town!

NO PAYDAY IN DETROIT
Payday, it’s payday, oh, payday,
Payday in Detroit no more,
Payday in Detroit no more.
Bye bye, bye bye, oh, bye bye,
Bye bye, my woman, I’m gone,
Bye bye, my woman, I’m gone.
You’ll miss me, you’ll miss me, you’ll miss me,
Baby gonna miss me when I’m gone,
Baby gonna miss me when I’m gone.
Easy rider, easy rider, oh easy rider,
Won’t be ridin’ easy any more,
Won’t be ridin’ easy any more.
Payday, it’s payday, oh, payday,
Payday at Detroit no more,
Payday at Detroit no more.

KILGARY MOUNTAIN
As I was a-walkin' over Kilgary Mountain
I met with Capt. Pepper and his money he was countin'
I rattled my pistols and I drew forth my saber
Sayin', 'Stand and deliver, for I am the bold deceiver'
Musha rig um du rum da
Whack fol the daddy o
Whack fol the daddy o
There's whiskey in the jar
I counted out his money, and it made a pretty penny
I put it in my pocket for to take it home to Jenny
She promised and she vowed she never would deceive me
But the devil's in the women and they always lie so easy
Musha rig um du rum da
Whack fol the daddy o
Whack fol the daddy o
There's whiskey in the jar
When I was awakened between six and seven
The guards all around me in numbers odd and even
I flew to my pistols, but alas I was mistaken
For Jenny's drawn my pistols and a prisoner I was taken
Musha rig um du rum da
Whack fol the daddy o
Whack fol the daddy o
There's whiskey in the jar
They put me into prison without judge or writin'
For robbing Capt. Pepper on Kilgary Mountain
But they didn't take my fists so I knocked the sentry down
And bid a fond farewell to the jail in Limric town
Musha rig um du rum da
Whack fol the daddy o
Whack fol the daddy o
There's whiskey in the jar
I wish I'd find my brother, the one that's in the army
I don't know where he's stationed, in Cork or in Kelarny
Together we'd go ramblin o'er the mountains of Kilkenny
I know he's treat me better than my darlin' sportin' Jenny
Musha rig um du rum da
Whack fol the daddy o
Whack fol the daddy o
There's whiskey in the jar
Now some take delight in fishin' and a-bowlin'
And others take delight in carriages a-rollin'
But I take delight in the juice of the barley
And courtin' pretty maidens in the morning oh so early
Musha rig um du rum da
Whack fol the daddy o
Whack fol the daddy o
There's whiskey in the jar

The Cruel War

THE CRUEL WAR
The cruel war is raging,
Johnny has to fight
I long to be with him
From morning till night
I want to be with him
Oh it grieves my heart
So Won't you let me come with you?
No, my love no
Tomorrow is Sunday
Monday is the day
That your captain will call you
And you must obey
Your captain will call you
Oh it grieves my heart
So won't you let me come with you?
No, my love no
I'll tie back my hair
Men's clothing I'll put on
I'll pass for your comrade
As we march along
I'll pass for your comrade
No one will ever know
Won't you let me come with you?
No, my love no
Oh Johnny, oh Johnny
I feel you are unkind
I love you far better
Than all of mankind
I love you far better
Than words can ever express
Won't you let me come with you?
Yes, my love yes
They marched into battle
She never left his side
'Til a bullet shell struck her
And love was denied
A bullet shell struck her
Tears came to Johnny's eyes
As he knelt down beside her
She silently died
The cruel war is raging,
Johnny has to fight
As he knelt down beside her
She silently died
The cruel war still raging,
Johnny has to fight
As he knelt down beside her
She silently died
